Mr. Pung

My most recent shoot was with the very talented Mr. Pung here who not only plays three instruments, but sings and conducts as well. He also happens to be a great person.

New Work for Appointments' Penfest 2013

New work for Appointments in Cincinnati, Ohio. Penfest is their annual event where representatives from one to two dozen of the world's most prestigious manufacturers of fine pens gather at their store to  show their complete lines and introduce new items. It is a pen lover's dream and attracts people from as far away as Memphis and Detroit. This is my third year to provide the photography for the advertising of the event. Brown Workshop provided the graphics.

The postcard flyer layout is shown below.

Ankur in Shades of Gray

Many believe models are little more than pretty faces, forever obsessed with their appearance, checking themselves out in mirrors and shop windows in stereotyped narcissism. I've got some news for you: models who do that are rarely that good. At least that's what my experience has shown. We should all be concerned enough about our appearance that we take at least one quick look in the mirror before leaving home to ensure we're not going to be a complete embarrassment to ourselves, our family, our friends, or our community. Just a brief glance to see our clothes are on right side out, there's no toothpaste running down the sides of our mouth, things like that.

Ankur Man is one of those models who spends just a fraction of a second with a mirror. He is working towards his PhD, is an articulate blogger, and positivity radiates from him. Check out what beautiful things he has to say about his home away from home, Cincinnati, Ohio to know there's a lot more to this model than meets the eye!

Jojo in the Rain

A cool, gentle rain accompanied by a nice breeze began during my shoot with Jojo. We took advantage of it!

New Work with Model Mark Hill

I received a message from model Mark Hill a couple weeks ago saying he'd be in town to visit his family. It proved to be perfect timing as I had just purchased some new photo equipment and like any boy with his new toy, I was itching to test it out! Fortunately I had worked with Mark on two other occasions over the years and had new ideas for how to shoot him - especially now that he has a newly ripped physique. Here's some of the results of our recent collaboration.

Jojo

One shot from a recent shoot with a wonderful guy who refers to himself as "friendly, conversational, and dorky". I don't know about the "dorky", but the rest suits him well and helped make for a great shoot experience!

Taxi Cam

These are some shots I did from through the window of a taxi in Manila one evening. Traffic was at a virtual standstill, and I was happy for it, as I had always found this particular avenue to be fascinating. It is even more so at night than during the day.

Brick vs. Nature

The last time I saw this building was last summer. It was nothing but a two-story cube of vines. Without the leaves on the vines one can see through to the structure beneath (barely).

New Feature of Some of My Recent Work!

Today I was caught totally off guard by the following statement about my work: "Jay has an impressive way of blending model within their surroundings. Within Jay's captures, models don't just inhabit their location, they devour it, becoming part of it." Wow. I'm speechless. Thanks so much to Tye over at Favorite Hunks & Other Things! Check out Favorite Hunks & Other Things blog for the rest of the article ... and photos!

Mr. Sunshine

Sometimes all the lighting equipment you need is that big ball of fire in the heavens - the sun. In the right place and at the right time of day it can be your best friend. Such was the case one day when I did a shoot for my friend Noel. We walked into this room, saw the great mural on the wall, and waited for the right time to begin shooting there. Here's the best shot from that set!

Marc Mendoza

Sometimes as a photographer you just want to shoot. If you know another photographer, there are times you can usually find him or her wanting to do the same. If that other photographer also likes to spend time in front of the camera, you have a subject as well. Well, it happened that my friend Marc Mendoza and I both had the same day free and we were both itching to do a shoot. We couldn't find anyone who wanted to model for us. It was summer in the Philippines and neither of us wanted to do more urban Manila scenery because it was almost 100 degrees! As Marc is a good photographer and also quite good in front of the camera, I had my subject for the day. Here's the best image I caught of him:

Ghost from the Past

Today I thought I'd share one of my favorite images shot several years ago of my good friend Yucel while he was showing me around the old walled city of Intramuros in Manila one day when I had to renew my visa at the Department of Immigration there. It was a great time and yielded some fun images, this being my favorite, shot in the church of San Augustine. I like the way the motion creates something of a ghostly appearance.

Lincoln

I rather like this side shot of the Lincoln Memorial opposed to the typical shot taken from the steps in front of the statue. What about you?
